Roundtable Preview: Who will return to the winner's circle in 2010?

VIJAY SINGH
He'll be 47 in February, but he's not too old to compete and win on the PGA TOUR. Look for Vijay Singh to get back in the victory circle after suffering through his first winless season since 2001.

The Big Fijian never really showed his old form after having surgery on his right knee in Jan. 2009. He didn't play as often (only 21 events) and certainly not as well (only six top-25s). Other than a short stretch late in the spring, where he earned two of his three top-10s, Singh wasn't often among the contenders.

He was eliminated after the second round of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup, so he didn't get a chance to defend his title. He also fell to No. 26 in the Official World Golf Rankings. But he continues to be one of the hardest workers on TOUR and his pride is likely to push him back into the top echelon. Expect career win No. 35 to come this season, possibly as early as the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, where he's won before.

Gabriel,

Thanks for this awesome website.
My Hats OFF to both GL and Victory Singh !! Go Get'em Vijay and you both have inspired me to get my 46 year old body in better shape.
Here is a nice article about why Vijay dominated in 2004.

Vijay was long off the tee than John Daly, Davis Love III, Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, and Retief Goosen.

Vijay hit almost 3 of every 4 greens (73%) – 2nd best on Tour, that translates to a more than 7 greens per tournament advantage for Vijay. He was first in proximity to the hole at 27' 11''.

He was 7th for 3 feet putting with a near-perfect 99.8%. Overall, Singh was 37th in putting average for greens hit in regulation. I think this stat plus GIR was the reason for his success.

Vijay has been the most aggressive player on reachable par 4s and 5s, “going for it” 264 times in 2004. He only landed on the putting surface about a third of the time, but was close enough on most attempts for a net 174-under-par in those calculated gambles.

Singh was in the Top 10 in an astounding 47 of the 102 statistical categories which the PGA Tour tracks. He was 1st in official money, scoring average, birdie average, going for the green (in two shots on par-5s and one shot on reachable par-4s), proximity to the hole on approach shots, proximity of approaches from the fairway, total birdies, total eagles, par breakers (birdies and eagles), Round 1 scoring average, Front 9 scoring average, Back 9 scoring average, early tee time scoring average, late tee time scoring average, par-4 scoring average, par-4 birdies, consecutive par-4 birdies, par-5 scoring average, and consecutive holes below par.

"I coach golf and what formula that seems to work well for my players is off season = more weight less reps...during season = less weight and higher reps.  Include a lot of stretches regardless of in or out of season."
